Course Learning Objectives #4

 Advantages of a Digital Representation

In a historical context:

  • Preservation: Old photos, books, or records can be scanned and saved digitally so they don’t get damaged over time. – more explain –

  • Accessibility: People anywhere in the world can look at historical documents online instead of visiting a museum or archive.

  • Searchability: Digital versions make it easy to search for specific names, dates, or events instead of flipping through physical pages.

In a modern context:

  • Sharing and communication: Digital information (like videos, posts, or images) can be shared instantly online.

  • Storage and backup: Large amounts of data can be stored on computers or in the cloud without taking up physical space.

  • Editing and creativity: It’s easier to edit, remix, or update digital content compared to physical materials.

Limitations of a Digital Representation

In a historical context:

  • Loss of authenticity: A digital copy isn’t the same as seeing the original artifact—it may lose details like texture or color accuracy. – made up of pixals – can only be one color – anything that happens between two pixals is lost – pixals show the image shown in class

  • Technology dependence: If files are saved in old formats or devices break, data can be lost.

  • Misinterpretation: Digital reproductions might not show full context or might be edited incorrectly. – Ai has become so advanced nowadays that it is so hard to understand what is real what is fake, what is altered? This is not only the case with photos and pictures but this can happen with videos what is real , fake, altered etc it can be very hard to see a difference. Photoshop can distort a lot of photos and videos but ai can also distort many things as well talk about the fact that the original – digital images can be doctored with photoshop can distort life. Photos can no longer be as useful because of how they can be altered and whether it is real or not

In a modern context:

  • Privacy and security risks: Digital data can be hacked, stolen, or misused.

  • Misinformation: It’s easy to alter or fake digital content, which can spread false information.

  • Digital divide: Not everyone has equal access to technology or the internet.
